Now I'm not going to write that much about this wonderful weekend - instead I present a picture fest of my three days down in Victoria. I would sit here and write for three days should I tell you all about it, and let's face it, I'm already procrastinating enough today (have three exams to study for, so be glad you're getting the pics!)...
Got in to Melbourne early Thursday morning (april 16), and met up with Carol from Scotland (met in NZ) for a quick brekkie/brunch - so good to catch up!
View from the plane
The South Cross Station
Nice coffee with Carol on a cosy side street down town.
Went back to Clarisse and JD's place to take a nap (gosh was I tired...!)
For you who don't know my history with Clarisse - here it is: We met in Lyon when I was studying there the year after high school/upper secondary school/gymnasiet. She was my Student Buddy - she's been studying in Melbourne for a while, and now she's working and living with her man JD =) It was so nice to see each other again - it's been like almost three years..!
And it's so cool that we're now down under both of us!
This is their house (not all of it, but their apartement's here) =)
JD took me on a walk before Clarisse got off work, he showed me around like a real professional tour guide:
I just love their graffiti all over the place - it's not vandalism, it's art =)
This is a spanish restaurant - they've painted the entire wall around it.
Central Place - the cutest, most charming little alley way ever =)
The old women in the last picture is a real celebrity in Melbourne - apparently she goes around and plays piano (I think it was piano) - and she's really talented!
This house is awesome - made out of wood, and the panels will move as the sun moves - so they don't need to spend money/energy on aircon etc - the small white tubes are circling with air and makes the walls move.
Very eco!
We had some chocolate at Haigh's - very popular place. And found some Kosta Boda - a whole shop with the swedish brand!
Records painted on a wall on the way downstairs to the record store, Suga - yes, it is a candy store =), and another chocolate store - KokoBlack - yummy easter bunnies!
Clarisse and me on a big purse outside the postoffice (?? I think it was the postoffice - at least many years ago - although now it's a shopping mall, really expensive!).
And hey! look at the stairs going from one side of the alley to the other up in the air - there're no doors - so it's just funny art =)
In the middle picture - do you guys see the pointy triangle to the right?? We're beneath it in the third pic =) This tower is very old and almost like a protected landmark - so they built the triangle over it - for protection and also for the artistic meaning of old meats new.
Another Suga store, and a very nice bottle shop - although I was told off that I couldn't take any pictures... haha - got one anyway! And then the Comedy Festival Headquarters - the festival was all over town, so things were happening everywhere - but this was the main building.
Then we went home for some dinner, some Marula drinks, and some wii =) before heading to Hell's Kitchen!
Friday;
Went out to Docklands - a very nice area down by the port
They've really filled the place with art everywhere - me likey me like!
Like here for instance; below is a wall of all the famous ozzies ever, and a couple of metres away are statues of some of them - don't I do a great Kylie??
Clarisse also did a Kylie, but no one was keen on trying Dame Edna =)
instead we played among the animals - so cute!!
After having something to eat and saying g'bye to Docklands, we headed to Queen Victoria Market - tried to look for some bargains, but didn't find that much - I got a nice necklace though
Here's the guy carving my necklace for me, one side says Emma 28 - 03 - 86, and the other goes; aussie aussie aussie!
of course!
We sneaked by Clarisse's job - the Street Café, and went to check out the museums
Then of course we got hungry again =) so we went to Bimbo's and had dessert pizza on the roof top - OMG or even OMFG!!! I love their roof top!!! Just like this is how my balcony will look like - once I get a balcony that is..! Loving all the lights!! almost like being back in India (or back in my apartement - although now I have new inspiration!)
On the street just outside there were some really funky stores, like this music store with sweet as guitars in the window - hehe, Katie, what would you say about getting one of these?? we might need to take it and run though, 'cause there's never a place in hell that we could pay for any of these...
We also got a look of some fricken cars - first a weird space mobile, and then a very very nice limo.
that night we went to Section8 - abso-fuckin-lutely one of the greatest bars I've seen. It's basically a dumpster slash cargo container. And they've covered the only wall with weird graffiti, hung lamps and plants from the tin roof, and yeah - well, if you're in Melbourne, this is an awesome place to get a few drinks at!
and here're our drinks - fruit coctails - lots and lots of fruit!
oh I forgot - they've also got a buddha statue! - and then there's a pic of the place from outside - although I prob should tell you that it's all pretty much outside..! Only one wall as I said, the rest is barbed wire =)
then it was time to go to bed - look how cosy I had it - a whole double bed sofa for myself =D
Saturday:
Clarisse and me at the big square (don't remember the name, but it's the place where the tourist information is, and lots of stuff happening - like for instance, a bike race;
We visited another museum, I made a wish in the fountain/pool outside, and then we played a bit with the waterwall at the entrance
can you see the small cube sticking out on the left side?? it's in the gold/yellow colour.
That's a small room you can go into, and the walls will be non-see-through - and then the room shoots out of the building (okey not fast, but slowly) - and when it's pretty much as far out as you can see on the pic, the walls (and floor!) will become transparent..! So you can see all the way down...!
i don't need to tell you that we didn't do that do i? i'm so scared of heights... although JD took Clarisse there for her birthday earlier this year - whoho she's brave!
random pic at one of the trams
Out to St.Kilda:
hehe - love the cupcakes =) but not as much as the art on top of the stores - and this is not just art - this is advertisment for the hair salongs underneath =) wow, mamy you've really got to put some effort into getting dad up on the roof and put up some stuff for your salong!
We had some nice lunch before checking out the graffiti people on this side of town - they had just started when we passed them the first time - and they've done a fair amount of work when we came by a bit later
the beach!
nice cars:
got some free comedy festival
walked around a little bit more and went for some last drinks at Cookie's roof top, really nice view
and then it was time for me to go home...
bye clarisse! hope to see you soon again!
it was awesome staying with you guys!!
I also took a picture of the town from up in the plane (as I did on my way in), although after taking this pic I kinda realised that "Wait a minute - is that really Melbourne?" - and I looked back and there it was.. though we just turned so I never got the chance of taking a good pic - so you'll have to make do with this one:
I'm def coming back to Melbourne some day - not this semester though - got way too much work to do now - two exams the week after I got back from Melbourne for example..!
And judging by the temperature when I was there (fricken cold...) - it won't get any better later on... might as well wait until spring/summer =)
